Lyophyllum decastes, also known as the fried chicken mushroom has smooth caps that are varied in color with whitish/gray stalks and white gills that darken with age. The spores are white.
This mushroom often grows in large clusters on disturbed ground and is widespread throughout Europe and north temperate regions including the West Coast of the US and Eastern Asia.
The species is cultivated for food in Japan and China and is considered to be both a food and a health supplement. It is grown on sawdust or bark compost. In North America, the species is considered edible and collected in the wild.
