Amanita muscaria, also known as the fly agaric is a white spotted red/orange capped mushroom native throughout boreal regions of the Northern Hemisphere that has mycorrhizal associations with both deciduous and coniferous trees.

Although considered poisonous, parboiling twice with water weakens its toxicity and breaks down the mushroom’s psychoactive substances.

The English mycologist John Ramsbottom reported that Amanita muscaria was used for getting rid of bugs in England and Sweden, and bug agaric was an old alternative name for the species.

The gills and spores are white.  A bulb at the base bears universal veil remnants in the form of distinct rings on the stem. There is generally no particular smell except a mild earthiness.
